Visit to Talla Reservoir on Monday 4th May 2015

As it looked as if the weather was going to be nice we set off for Talla Reservoir. The sun shone and as we travelled up the motorway to Moffat we noticed how the hedges were definitely looking green, the fields were brown with recent ploughing and the dandelions were golden yellow. The hills were still looking quite brown but majestic in the bright sunshine.

Passing by the source of the River Tweed we reached Tweedsmuir and turned off the main road heading towards St Mary's Loch. Travelling alongside Talla Reservoir we saw thousands of newly planted trees on the hillside, evidence of the work of Border Forest Trust.

Trees, trees and more trees!

We had been told there were parking places at the end of the reservoir just before the steep climb out of the valley. A track runs up alongside Games Hope Burn and this is where we started our walk.

We spotted grey wagtails and common sandpipers by the water and oystercatchers and a female goosander on the reservoir as we set off. Wheatears, chaffinches, pied wagtails and skylarks were all over the steep hillsides as we followed the undulating track. It runs alongside the water for a while.

After the rain of the day before the burn was quite full and had a beautiful show of primroses on the opposite bank.

Violets, dandelions, daisies, Bumble bees, rocks covered with bright green lichen, thistles and cuckoo flower were all around.

A lovely walk on a lovely day. Well worth a visit.
