Day 2 - 30 Days Wild project

Stormy weather and so with high tide around noon we headed for what is one of our favourite local beaches - Powillimount (near Southerness).

Because the wind was still strong and cold we stayed in the car (our mobile hide!)

But although we thought there would not be much activity, by sitting in the same place we saw much more than we expected whilst watching the waves and incoming tide.

 As the waves came closer various flocks of birds flew by but we couldn't identify them nor photograph them.
Then they came even closer and we managed both.

 We thought we saw something in the water but didn't say anything in case it turned out to be vegetation, a log or a rock.
However, it eventually turned out to be a grey seal. Please excuse the poor distant photo taken through the windscreen.

Then a gull of sorts flew by but with a different 'look'. This eventually landed and we realised it was a Tern.

To give a sense of the weather conditions I will attempt to attach a couple of movies taken out of the side window. (being new to blogging, this is a first for us )
 
 
Looking forward to a calmer day tomorrow.

Danevale Park was a first for us in the Snowdrop Festival but it was not a first for Danevale Park. It first opened for snowdrops in 1951, and has opened every year since! In 2013 Mrs Gillespie was awarded The Diana Macnab Award for outstanding services to Scotland's Gardens.       Danevale Park is on the A713 two miles from Castle Douglas and one mile short of Crossmichael. The garden offers disabled access and visitors are welcome to bring their dogs.     Scotlands Gardens says of Danevale - The mature grounds have a wonderful display of snowdrops as well as aconites and many other wild flowers. Walks through the woods and alongside the River Dee, followed by an old fashioned afternoon tea in the house can make this a memorable day!  Well they were correct! Day 9 - 30 Days Wild project

We had a little more success with the moth traps from last night - but still only caught 4 moths in total. A day in the garden was truly essential if we were to have fresh fruit and veg later in the year. Nothing has done very well so far, so the day was spent reseeding or weeding. Two activities were aimed at our garden wildlife. Firstly, using some sheep wool we had teased from wire fencing during recent rambles, I refilled an old bird feeder which we hang from a tree and birds pull out strands for their nest building. Another source of nesting material, especially for our local House Sparrows, is the hanging basket liner which tops a bug hotel in our garden. This year it was totally demolished but we don't have a replacement liner - so it's on our shopping list for our next visit to a garden centre!! Floral Favourites February 2016

Have decided to keep a record of the floral highlights of our garden from month to month as this year progresses. Here are the recollections for February. Well January may have been very mild, wet and miserable but winter has got it's own back this month! We have had several severe frosts, albeit with subsequent sunny days, but it has been very cold. We even had a sprinkling of snow too. Do you remember mornings when the inside of the window was frosted? Well we had frost on the windows - but only on the outside!     Some of the flowers that were budding/flowering have been halted in their growth. Nothing, however, seems to stop the snowdrops. What strong little flowers they are to push through the ground and look so beautiful.     The Christmas roses are another value for money plant at this time of year.
