Day 16 - 30 Days Wild Project

We had been invited by a friend to go for a walk along the River Annan today. He had seen a rare wild flower along there the other day and was going back to take a photograph, and asked if we wanted to go along too. So, on a warm but slightly overcast afternoon we set off. The river was very still but covered in swallows and martins swooping for flies.

There were several herons in the river as we walked along - all of them posing nicely for photographs.

There were also some other lovely birds to see today too.

Mallard

Goosander

Pied wagtail

We finally came to the section of river where Brian had seen his flower.

He thinks it is Meadow Saxifrage - quite a rare find around here, but we couldn't agree or disagree as we didn't know!
Here are a few other flowers we saw this afternoon too.

Yellow pimpernel
Bugle

Crosswort
Comfrey

Forget me not
Pink purslane

Crossing the river on a rather wobbly bridge meant we could head back along the other side of the river.

Having seen just a couple of individual specimens of orchids on the other side of the river, we now found a field with many more.

Common spotted orchids and Northern Marsh orchids.

A very pleasant walk which would be well worth doing again!
