Day 8 - 30 Days Wild project

Today we decided to head for a local Wildlife Trust reserve. It is 5 miles away as the crow flies but crows can fly across the Solway - we have to drive to Gretna, across the border and around Carlisle to get to Bowness on Solway.
You cannot see from this picture but it was snowing - not real snow but 'fluff' from the willow. It was everywhere and in some areas the grass was covered with a layer of white.

When the sun came out it was quite warm and the Damselflies and Butterflies began to take flight.

A few daytime flying moths were flitting about but will need some careful examining of the photos to identify them.

One or two insects were actually caught in the act of devouring their prey! It wasn't until we looked at the photos enlarged, that we saw the 'meal' !
Don't forget that if you click on any picture it will expand to full screen, with a slide show of all these pics.
We think it's a 4 spot chaser being eaten

Not sure what on the menu here

We did hear quite a few birds during the ramble but with more leaves on the trees and shrubs we didn't always see the long enough for a photo.
Whitethroat being very vocal

Damsels were the hit of the day but although we saw a couple of larger Dragonflies they wouldn't cooperate and sit still.

We stumbled across a small crèche of grasshoppers which again were reluctant to stay still for very long.

Tonight we are setting moth traps in the garden - hoping that todays warm weather will encourage more moths to venture out.
