30 Days Going Wild - Day 10

June 10th

As this weekend is National Moth Night (9-11th June) we just had to put out the moth traps overnight for opening today as our Going Wild activity .Last night was very warm and still - ideal for going outside looking for moths. There is no point going out before at least 10.30-11pm at the moment as it just isn't dark enough!
The moths we collected last night were put into the fridge overnight (which does not do them any harm!) and then this morning I had to start sorting. We had put about 50 pots in the fridge overnight so I needed to sort them before looking in the traps to see what else there was. Moths that I can identify soon get put out in the hedge (to hide them from the birds!) but the small micros are more difficult for me and I need to take photos so that, if necessary, I can upload them and get help with their identification!

It takes quite a time to sort the moths in the fridge and then it is back to the traps. We had our biggest catch of the year, with at least 2 new moths for our garden. Some of them are absolutely beautiful - what a shame so many people think moths are all brown!

The theme for this year's Moth Night is Hawk Moths, so just to stick with the theme - here's a Hawk Moth from our trap too.
