30 Days Going Wild - Day 15

June 15th
Clatteringshaws Loch is a reservoir created by damming the River Dee as part of the Galloway Hydro Electric Scheme. There was a mothing event being held at the Visitor Centre today and being avid "moth"ers we went along.
Looking over the loch you can see the Galloway hills, including the Merrick (highest hill in the Southern Uplands) The views are stunning, and as well as walks around the Galloway Forest, the centre is one of the best places to enjoy the night sky. The forest  has been awarded the status of being a Dark Sky Park.
Four moth traps had been set up overnight and were being emptied as we arrived. Many of the moths were beautiful specimens - certainly not the brown things many people think of as moths! Visitors to the centre were enthralled when they came and saw what was on display! A fish tank had been provided to put specimens in, as a way of displaying them. Not one person we talked to thought the moths were ugly or scary!
